Lecturer Introduction
Estudio Macías Peredo寄语
━
Estudio Macías Peredo is a Mexican architecture firm, led by architects Salvador Macías, Magui Peredo and Diego Quirarte. We define their design philosophy as follows :“We have found trough methodical observation an indispensable tool for an intense search to understand the current problems and needs of the cities and global architecture. And yet we conceive each intervention as a manifestation that arises and draws on the conditions and resources of both, its situation and its specific context.▲Project @ Complejo Industrial
In our context, much of the construction activity is still closely linked to manual work. In fact, today craft and hand working are considerably common in the population of Mexico. In our office there is an open attitude to this condition, where we embrace it as a fundamental part of the work we do. We seek to align our timeless and universal interests with the environment we currently work at. We look for strategies where anticipation and planning admit the improvisation and experimentation of crafts. We pursue a way of creating that allow the hand-worker to participate in the building process, so he or she, can translate the project’s intentions to its own abilities. Not because of a nostalgia of an instrument in extinction, but for the sustainable opportunities and current issues that could be recovered or continued in contribution of our present time.”

Our talk is organized by a central idea and five additional themes. The central idea is the title of the conference "A practice" and refers to the understanding of our professional practice as the most important project of our architecture firm.Next, we tap into five themes to reflect on the different filters through which we understand the world and, therefore, architecture. Throughout the conversation, we weave these themes with specific projects of us, with the intention of showing who we are, where we come from and the way in which our context and the universe in which we live shape what we do and our practice.

The relations between these three elements, the environment, the intervention and its content, becomes the driving force that informs the emergence of our ideas and therefore the outcome of our work. Thus, it is not the intervention on itself, but the synergy triggered by its components, on a determined system, that becomes the very target for our explorations. In our work, the conceptualization of the idea gets deliberately away from the formal creation of an object, to inform and get informed by both its context and its content. As a result, the interventions become integral extensions of an ensemble, whose properties are redefined along the design process. This approach has consequently focused our attention upon the territories and processes of generation of the public and private space, the boundary definition of interior and exterior, and the inherent ambivalence of such dichotomies. The formal manifestation of our work is the result of a coherent set of relations between the elements that define it. In that sense, the articulation of such components has to be seen from a broader perspective, larger than the intervention itself, forcing us to define a base logic that would bring coherence upon the system as a whole. The logics behind the ensembles are not arbitrarily determined, on the contrary, they emerge from the thoughtful study of our everyday environment.

CO-LAB Design Office
Founded by Joana Gomes and Joshua Beck in 2010, CO-LAB is a full-service architecture studio located in Tulum, Mexico. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Yucatan, our projects encourage a greater connection to the natural world through design. Embracing sustainable principles, each project carefully weaves the architectural program with the beauty of each site to create unique contextual designs. Locally sourced natural materials and handcrafted finishes render rooms built around views of nature, gentle breezes, light and shadows, to create new compositions and relationships. Seeing beauty in the imperfections of hand-crafted finishes and locally sourced natural materials CO-LAB works directly with artisans to create sustainable environments in harmony with their surroundings.

Víctor Legorreta
Since our founding in 1965 by Ricardo Legorreta, Noé Castro and Carlos Vargas Sr., as LEGORRETA ARQUITECTOS (now LEGORRETA®) we have managed to stay true to our original goal of creating the best architecture inspired by human values. In LEGORRETA® we seek to create an architecture that meets the needs of any society while contributing to build better cities. Delivering functionality, efficiency and cost control, we must design human and friendly environments, with atmospheres that convey peace, privacy and optimism.
In Víctor Legorreta’s Masterclass, we will give a short introduction on the office and relationship with luis barragan . Afterwards, we shall be presenting a wide range of projects from residences located not only in Mexico, but also in other parts of the world. Each of the houses that are presented will show the firm’s compromise to adapt to its context and demonstrate the extensive usage of local materials. This use of endemic materials offer a varied sampling of rock, quarried stone, brick, wood, concrete, glass and ceramics taken from the regions where they are built.
Art has always played a crucial role in our projects, so art in dwellings is no exception. LEGORRETA has been vocal of incorporating the artists in the very initial phases of each project, and we are proud exporters of Mexican talent. From the time we undertake the very first sketches, or in the preliminary design phases, we look at whether a visual artist should be included. We don’t hesitate to call on artists if we think their work can enrich the final project’s outcome. In a first instance, obviously, our selection responds to the nature and purpose of the project, and later to its format and the materials—characteristic of the way each artist embodies his or her creativity—that would best accentuate the essence of a given space. One of the advantages of commissioning artworks from the very launch of a project is that throughout the development process it allows us to combine artists’ concepts with our own so that art and architecture nurture one another and blend into the overall project.
